Chandler city manager stepping down

After a rocky 16 months as Chandlers city manager, Donna Dreska is expected to leave the office by the end of the week.
Dreska sent an e-mail to all city employees today saying she will leave the job on Friday.
The City Council must approve the resignation agreement at its meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in Council Chambers at the Chandler Downtown Library, 22 S. Delaware St.
While I am excited at the prospect of pursuing other opportunities and of having some down time, I will truly miss working with such a wonderful group of individuals! Dreska wrote in her e-mail to city employees. She added, We have started on a course to make the City of Chandler even stronger as an organization. I am confident that with (assistant city managers) Pat McDermott and Rich Dlugas leading this organization this will continue.
Dreskas possible replacement has not been named.
Conflicts with the police department have marred Dreskas tenure as city manager, a $148,000-a-year job.
Last week, Dreska wrote to the Tempe Union High School District to apologize for comments made by Chandler police during an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by a teacher. In March, the city manager publicly criticized two councilmen for pushing along a purchase for stun guns for police and bypassing normal budgeting processes.
In October, police officer Dan Lovelace was charged with second-degree murder after he fatally shot Ahwatukee Foothills resident Dawn Rae Nelson. He was fired soon after that, but the event prompted criticism of the police department and Police Chief Bobby Joe Harris for a growing list of police and personnel problems.
Dreska found herself in the middle of those discussions because she has the authority to fire the chief. But council members, many of whom supported Harris, can fire the city manager.
Soon after Harris resigned in January 10 months earlier than he initially said he would the council authorized a review of the city manager, with some council members saying she didnt communicate well with them or other city employees. However, other council members said the review was a way to retaliate against Dreska for being tough on the chief.
